Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political participation is essential for the sustainability of democracy, yet many marginalized communities in Nigeria face significant barriers that limit their ability to engage in the political process. Gusau LGA, located in Zamfara State, is home to various marginalized groups who often encounter challenges in participating in local and national elections. Factors such as poverty, lack of political education, cultural practices, and insecurity are major barriers that restrict the ability of these groups to fully participate in the political landscape (Aliyu & Bello, 2024). Marginalized communities in Gusau LGA, particularly women, youth, and rural populations, face systemic obstacles in accessing political information and exercising their right to vote or run for office. This study seeks to identify and evaluate these barriers, exploring how they affect political engagement in Gusau LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although there are numerous efforts to enhance political participation in Nigeria, marginalized communities in Gusau LGA continue to face significant challenges that hinder their political involvement. This study seeks to examine these barriers in depth, focusing on how social, economic, and cultural factors prevent marginalized groups from participating in political processes. Understanding these barriers will provide valuable insights into the structural challenges that need to be addressed to promote greater inclusivity in political participation.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges that marginalized communities face in participating in politics, particularly in rural areas of Zamfara State. The findings will inform policymakers and civil society organizations working to enhance inclusive political participation, providing a foundation for developing strategies that address these barriers and promote more equitable engagement in the political process.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the barriers to political participation faced by marginalized communities in Gusau LGA, Zamfara State. It will examine socio-economic, cultural, and political factors affecting participation in elections and political activities. The study will not extend to other LGAs in Zamfara State or other forms of political participation beyond elections. Limitations include challenges in accessing marginalized groups and the potential for biases in self-reported data.
